How We Test Gaming Devices
Every device we review goes through a standardized testing process. We run each game at maximum settings for 30 minutes and measure average FPS, 1% low FPS (frame drops), thermal throttling, and battery drain. We test on real games — not synthetic benchmarks — because that's what matters to you.

The 165Hz display is the smoothest we've tested — once you play at 165Hz, 120Hz feels sluggish.
AirTrigger 9 Ultrasonic Buttons: The signature feature. Two ultrasonic shoulder buttons respond to touch, swipe, and press gestures. Map them to aim/shoot for an instant competitive advantage. They feel like real controller triggers, and the customizable vibration feedback is excellent.

Drawbacks: No gaming-specific features (no shoulder triggers, no high refresh rate beyond 120Hz, no active cooling). The phone gets warm during extended sessions. Battery life during gaming is shorter than Android gaming phones (4-4.5 hours). Accessories and controller options are more limited.

Phone vs. Tablet for Competitive Gaming

Buying Guide: What to Look For
Chipset
The processor is the single most important spec for gaming. In 2026, the hierarchy is:
- Snapdragon 8 Elite / Apple A19 Pro — Top tier. Runs everything maxed out.
- Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 / A18 Pro / Dimensity 9400 — Excellent. Handles all games at high settings.
- Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 / A17 Pro / Dimensity 9300 — Still very good. May need to lower some settings in the most demanding games.
- Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 / Dimensity 8400 — Mid-range. Plays most games at medium settings. Struggles with Genshin/Honkai maxed.
Display
Refresh rate matters for competitive games. 60Hz is the minimum. 90Hz is good. 120Hz is the sweet spot — almost all competitive games now support it. 144Hz and 165Hz are nice-to-haves but few games take advantage beyond 120Hz.
AMOLED vs. LCD: AMOLED offers better contrast, deeper blacks, and faster pixel response times (less ghosting). LCD is cheaper. For gaming, AMOLED is strongly preferred.
Touch sampling rate: Higher = more responsive to your inputs. 240Hz minimum for competitive gaming. Top gaming phones offer 720Hz+ touch sampling.
Battery
Gaming drains batteries fast. Expect 3-6 hours of screen-on gaming time depending on the game and settings. A 5000mAh battery is the minimum for gaming phones. 6000mAh+ is ideal. Fast charging (65W+) is essential so you can top up during breaks.
Cooling
Sustained performance matters more than peak performance. A phone that hits 120fps for 5 minutes then throttles to 80fps is worse than one that holds a steady 100fps. Look for:
- Active cooling (fan): Best sustained performance. Found in RedMagic and some ROG models.
- Vapor chamber: Large heat-spreading surface. Standard in flagships.
- Graphite sheets: Basic cooling. Found in mid-range phones.
RAM & Storage
8GB RAM is the minimum for gaming in 2026. 12GB is comfortable. 16GB is future-proof. For storage, games are getting larger — Genshin Impact alone uses 20GB+. Get at least 256GB, preferably with UFS 4.0 storage for faster load times.
