Spanish History
Spain is a country located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. Spain also includes a group of Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. Spain is the 4th largest country in Europe with a population of over 46 million people.
The current Spanish territory was first inhabited by Neanderthals. The first Homo sapiens arrived in Spain around 35,000 BC. The arrival of the Celts in the 6th century BC marks the beginning of Spanish history.
The Celts were eventually replaced by the Visigoths who ruled Spain until the 8th century AD. The Visigoths were then replaced by the Moors who ruled Spain for over 700 years. The Moors were eventually defeated by the Christians in 1492.
Since 1492, Spain has been ruled by a monarchy. The Spanish monarchy has been one of the oldest in Europe. The current Spanish monarchy was established in 1715.
